Piri Piri Tomato Sauce with Mushrooms


Our spicy, smoky Piri Piri Blend adds heat and zest to traditional vegetarian spaghetti sauce in this delicious twist on an Italian classic.


Prep time: 10 min | Cook time: 50 min | Serves: 4 portions



  • ¾ cup onion

  • 1 Tbsp garlic

  • ½ cup red wine

  • 1 bay leaf

  • 1 ½ cup, washed, quartered white mushrooms

  • 2 each 14.5 oz canned diced tomatoes

  • ½ cup water

  • 2 Tbsp tomato paste

  • 1 ½ Tbsp Portuguese Piri Piri Blend

  • 1 Tbsp vegetable oil

  • Salt and pepper


  1. Chop the onion into fine dice, finely mince the garlic.

  2. In a medium non-reactive pot, heat the vegetable oil on medium heat, add the onion and garlic, sauté for 4 minutes.   Add the red wine, simmer 2 more minutes.

  3. Add the mushrooms, tomato and water.  Simmer on low heat for 45 minutes.

  4. Add the Tomato paste and Piri Piri blend. Let simmer for another 5 minutes.

  5. Remove one third of the sauce and blend in a high speed blender. Add back to pot, adjust seasoning with salt and pepper.

  6. If a spicier sauce is desired, add another half teaspoon at a time of Piri Piri blend.  Serve with favorite pasta.
