LABNEH WITH ZAHTAR

Zahtar is an authentic Middle Eastern mix of herbs and spices, including sumac, thyme, oregano and sesame seeds. The flavors will shine in this simple Lebanese yogurt, which is delicious on bread or with pita chips.

Ingredients

  • 2 Cups Plain Yogurt 

  • 1/2 Teaspoon Kosher Sea Salt Flakes

  • 1 1/2 Teaspoons Zahtar

  • 2 Tablespoons Extra-Virgin Olive Oil, for serving 

  • Pita Chips, for serving


Directions

  1. Cut piece of cheesecloth or muslin towel into 1-foot square. Place cloth over strainer and pour yogurt into cloth. Add salt and Zahtar and stir lightly with spoon.

  2. Fold corners of cloth into center and tie together with string. Place heavy plate on bag and put strainer in larger bowl to capture draining liquid. Refrigerate for at least 12 hours. Mixture can be left for up to 3 days. 

  3. Remove mixture from bowl, discarding excess liquid. Unwrap cheesecloth and discard. 

  4. Transfer labneh to bowl and stir to break up cheese until smooth. Drizzle with olive oil and Zahtar and serve with pita chips.
