Beef Rendang Curry Sloppy Joe

Beef Rendang Sloppy Joes are a fresh take on an old favorite. In this recipe, the sweetness typically provided by ketchup is replaced by the coconut-inflected, mildly spicy flavors of our Indonesian Rendang Curry Starter.

Prep time: 5 min | Cook time: 20 min | Yields: 4 servings

  • 1 lb ground beef

  • ½ cup Indonesian Rendang Curry Starter

  • ½ cup onion, finely chopped

  • 2 tsp vegetable oil

  • ½ cup tomato sauce

  • ½ cup water

  • 2 tsp garlic, finely chopped

  • 1 Tbsp brown sugar

  • 4 each hamburger buns

  • Kosher salt

  1. Heat the half cup of water together with the half cup of tomato sauce.  Whisk in the Indonesian Rendang Sauce Starter, and let simmer for one minute. Remove from heat.

  2. Meanwhile, heat the oil in a medium skillet, add the chopped onion and garlic, and sauté for 10 minutes, stirring often until cooked and translucent.

  3. Add the ground chuck, tomato Rendang liquid, and brown sugar, stirring well. Let simmer for 20 minutes until beef is cooked through, and sauce is thickened.

  4. Serve atop hamburger buns with your favorite side dishes.
